County Mayo is the third largest county in Ireland. Westport is a town in County Mayo. It is located at the south-east corner of Clew Bay on the west coast of Ireland.
Westport is a popular tourist destination. It is designated as a heritage town. People visit Westport for many reasons: the magnificent scenery, the pubs and restaurants. It is a great base for visitors to tour the region.
Clew Bay is closely situated to the town, which contains excellent examples of sunken drumlins and many tiny islands. Clew Bay is internationally recognised, sea angling centre. It is considered an excellent venue for skate, tope, huss and ray fishing.
The' Great Western Greenway' walking and cycling trail begins in Westport and ends in Achill. It was once a railway which spanned an inpressive 43.5km. The railway closed in 1937. It's been given a new lease of life as a traffic-free track. Cyclists and walkers delight with its breathtaking views. Whatever your leval of fitness may be, there is a portion of the track to suit you.
Croagh Patrick (an important site of pilgrimage) is 8 kilometres from Westport. It is the third highest mountain in County Mayo. Considered the holiest mountain in Ireland. It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year (which is the last Sunday in July). In the 1980's a seam of gold was discovered in the mountain. Due to local opposition the Mayo County Council decided not to allow mining.
Westport House - is certainly one of Ireland's best loved heritage homes. It has been described as the most beautiful house in Ireland. Visitors can immerse themselves in what life was like as far back as the 16th century. The grounds surrounding Westport House are a combination of natural wonders. From the idylic backdrop of the Croagh Patrick, The beauty of Clew Bay, it is a delight to experience.
